Under very grey skies on a muddy oval at Reid Park, our boys under 15 AFL side were keen to perform well to represent the school and themselves to the best of their ability. The vast majority of the team was made up of students from Years 7 and 8 with only 4 boys from Year 9. Two parents volunteered their time to coach the boys on the day. Very special thanks to Brett Staples (Joshua’s Dad) and Mark Hynes (James’s Dad) for their generosity and expertise.
We started with a game against Canberra High which we won convincingly 6.0.36 to 0.3.3.
Goal scorers were Jake Thorpe 2, Ryan Stewart 2, Connor Bobruk and Jordan McMaster.
The second game was against Lyneham High school and the boys were beaten convincingly. The score was 6.2 38 to 1.1.7. Our only goal kicker was Mitchell Robinson. Whilst beaten the boys still enjoyed the game and had a great deal of fun on the very muddy cricket pitch area in the centre of the oval.
Our final game was against the ultimate winners of the carnival- St Mary Mackillop College. They were an outstanding team with seasoned players all over the field. Our players were at a great disadvantage in size and experience and were beaten 8.8. 56 to 0.0.0. Our boys never gave up trying and should be very proud of their efforts in all three games. Everyone contributed to the team on the day.
Some of our outstanding players across the day were Kial Huender, Tayus Withers, Jake Thorpe, Connor Bobruk, Ryan Stewart, Tate Vaivads and Joshua Staples. The day was a great learning experience for our junior players and we look forward to some excellent performances in the future.
Again, a big thank you to Brett Staples and Mark Hynes for their assistance on the sideline, to Liam Stakelum for coaching the boys at the school and to Nic Whatman for organising the team’s attendance on the day.
